Treating Acne Scars
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a treatment that is sweeping the dermatology industry. Celebrities have already caught on, and soon you can too!
What is platelet-rich plasma?
Sometimes called the “vampire facial,” PRP is a procedure used to treat various skin issues. PRP is nonsurgical, using a patient’s own blood to stimulate the growth of collagen and elastin. The blood is drawn, generally from the arm, and then spun to separate Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM) from the rest of the blood. The PRFM is then injected into the areas needing treatment.
How do PRP injections work for acne scars?
Acne scars can be the bane of one’s existence. Even with makeup, the deep lines and pocks can be hard to cover up. However, ridding of these annoying scars is not impossible! PRP treatments restore collagen and elastin in the face, which triggers the healing process and in turn fills out acne scars. Patients will begin noticing small results immediately following the treatment; however, full results may take up to three weeks. We also recommend multiple treatments to get the most out of the procedure — the number of treatments a patient will need depends on his or her specific condition and its severity.
What are the risks involved with PRP treatments?
Since PRP uses a patient’s own blood, there is essentially no risk for allergic reactions or lumping, which can both be side effects of synthetic filler injections. In addition, the process takes minutes and uses a small needle, so the patient will only feel a slight amount of pain. The only known risks associated with PRP injection are common and minor swelling and/or bruising at the injection site. Applying a cool compress to the skin right after the procedure can minimize this.
